Antonín Gavlas - enamels
Antonín Gavlas´s way to enamel was logical. Enamel is vitreous matter with aluminium additives so it often behaves as ceramic glaze. Because of Antonín Gavlas´s knowledge of ceramics he was invited to the 5th International symposium called Frýdlant´s artistic enamel in 2003.
It was the first time of meeting with enamel but he was keened on it immediately. He was pleasantly surprised and maybe a little caught. He realized one thing. Enamel had extremly wide possibilities that weren´t available and well-known. It behaves a bit different than a ceramic glaze. And there is a big opportunity for technological experiments and enrichment of expression and topic. It has appeared some parallels with encaustic he worked with. Encaustic conjures up impression of depth and that is typical for enamel too. Frýdlant´s experience Antonín Gavlas harnessed on organization of The International symposium of enamel Vítkovice 2006. At that time he worked with big formats, sheet metal that is used for silage towers so he could try new positions. After one year he returned to Frýdlant like one of organizers and continued in his artistic work.
As far as enamel is concerned he continued in his basic artistic conception that means a stylized figures situated in geometrically limited relations. Regardless it has appeared new elements that namel has brought to his topics too. At first it was a technic of stencil that he was interested in and it sketched in his artistic work with colour matter and drawing that is for Antonín Gavlas and enamel typical.
In his Vítkovice´s episode he tried monumental conception and he worked with stencil and drawing again. In expression was stressed decorativeness. He experiments with raw colours, he stresses an expressive effect of colour and it is in contrast with figure. New elements appeared in last Frýdlant´s meeting. In some topics he returnes to antiquity and in his older artistic works we can see his admiration to renaissance. He preferences a bigger space of coloured matter because it has specific attributes that he uses in creation of his mysterious and inspiring cosmic spaces that was hidden in his renaissance sensing soul.
