PAINTINGS

Antonín GAVLAS

is a versatile artist using various art techniques. The most typical are his paintings which are painted with a unique artistic technique called encaustics. He uses acrylics, inks and combination of various structural elements for his paintings, too.

Themes of his paintings (as well as enamels, ceramics, photomontages, etc.) are often mysterious. They are made up of geometric surfaces which are often enlivened with stylized figures. These compositions symbolize relations among earth, sky and man and represent the cosmic order in its endless forms...

ENCAUSTIC

Encaustic is one of the oldest painting techniques which was already used ancient Egyptians before more than 5000 years. Finally it was used in antique Greece and Rime and from this time has become term “enkausis”. „Enkausis” means firing, so encaustic is firing wax painting.
Encaustic hue originates from combination of melting-down wax, resin, colour pigments and other ingredients which are put down on base (mixture must be hot) and then it is heat-treated and finally it is fired again.
Since decline of antique empire encaustic has been forgotten for centuries and nowadays only few painters use this technique because encaustic is laborious and technological very persnickety.
However thanks its chemical constitution encaustic is the most lasting painting technique in the world. High content of beeswax is chemically inert substance ensures that encaustic painting has not changed for centuries and millenniums and preserved its original coloured freshness. This cannot be said about other techniques.
Very pleasant is its velvety polish that is connected with characteristic honeyed smell.
